What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a brain-based disorder that can cause communication and social challenges. The severity of symptoms and the effects of ASD are different for each person. People with ASD may communicate, interact, behave  and learn in ways that are different from others. The abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged.  Autism is about 4.5 times more likely to affect boys than girls.
