Cluttering is a fluency disorder in which an individual speaks rapidly and/or with an irregular speaking rate and demonstrates excessive disfluencies.
Symptoms:
- Talking too fast
- Putting additional emphasis on speech sounds
- Adding pauses where there shouldn’t be
- Monotone speech
- Excessive stuttering behaviors
Treatment:
- Start by having the individual speak slower
- Visual aids such as a speech speedometer
- Exaggerate stressed syllables in words
- Increase awareness
