By Reading & Language Learning Center (RLLC)

Can you believe it? It’s already time to start back-to-school shopping again. As you do, consider picking up some of the accessories listed below that can aid in your child’s learning success. These resources are helpful for all children, but especially those with ADHD, dyslexia, executive functioning concerns, and difficulty focusing

  • Wiggle seat / Wobble Cushion / Balance Disc
    • Increases attention & length of time child is able to tolerate sitting (can be used in a chair or on the floor)
    • Improves balance, core strength, and postural control
    • Produces calming effect for sensory seekers (provides vestibular and proprioceptive input)
      • Textured version – provides spikes or bumps on the surface for additional tactile input
      • Smooth version – better suited for kids who are tactile sensitive (try the Squishy Gel Cushion, filled with gel instead of air)
  • Pencil grip
    • Trains fingers to hold a pencil more comfortably (naturally opens up space between thumb & index finger)
    • Prevents hand fatigue while writing
    • Available in different varieties based on grip, age/size,  and left vs. right handed writers
      • Write-It-Right Grips – 2 sizes (age 3-6 & 6+), left/right handed options, trains pencil angle & finger position
      • The Pencil Grip – 2 sizes (regular & jumbo), improves comfort for child with a stiff or rigid pencil grasp
      • Start Right Pencil Grip & Crossover Grip – both help with a  “wrapped thumb,” where the thumb curls over the top of the pencil and/or index finger
  • Student planner
    • Improves executive functioning skills, aid in your child’s organizational and planning skills
  • Reading guide strip
    • Decreases word and line skipping while reading (if the entire line is overwhelming, try one word at a time with the FingerFocus Highlighter)
    • Reduces eye strain and fatigue
    • Aids the brain in processing information in an organized manner, increasing focus and comprehension while decreasing frustration
